According to the most recent estimate, the share of smokers in Russia has dropped by 20%, while the number of people consuming alcohol has decreased by 13.5%, said the Minister of Health of Russia Veronika Skvortsova. Over the past three years, some positive results have been achieved. It is confirmed by a number of thorough sociological researches, including those under the auspices of the UN. In particular, a research within the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) revealed that “in the Russian Federation, tobacco consumption has declined from almost 40% in 2009 to 30.9% in 2016″.
The head of the Ministry of Health noted that during the period from 2004 to 2015 the number of young smokers decreased by three times.
Nonetheless, according to the results of the VTsIOM study (published at the end of May), the overall share of smokers in Russia has not changed and still makes up about a third of the population (32%). The intensity of smoking remains invariably high: 20% of respondents smoke not less than a pack of cigarettes a day.
Skvortsova also reported a decrease in the number of Russians who consume alcohol, and a decline in alcohol consumption per capita, by almost 13.5%.
Recently, Rospotrebnadzor reported that consumption of strong alcoholic beverages in Russia has almost halved over the past five years. Magadan, Moscow, Sakhalin Oblast and Komi have been identified as the most drinking regions of the country.
After giving up bad habits, Russians tend to get actively involved in sports. Adherence to an active way of life has increased by 18%.
According to the head of the Ministry, such results show the correctness of the policy chosen by the state, and the legislative base.
In order to achieve even greater progress, the Ministry of Health earlier proposed to deprive the movies that contain scenes of smoking of state support.
